Honolulu Sports & Spine Surgery Center Announces First Robotic-Assisted Hip Replacement Surgery in Hawai‘i Performed by Paul Norio Morton, M.D. Using the Rosa® Hip Replacement System – the Only One on O‘ahu

Media are welcome to “Meet our New Robot” on Saturday, April 30th, at 1pm, which will also include a Hawaiian blessing and pūpū reception.

Honolulu, HI – (Tuesday, April 26, 2022) Honolulu Spine Center, LLC dba Honolulu Sports & Spine Surgery Center (“Honolulu Spine”) is excited to announce their recent acquisition of the ROSA® Hip and ROSA® Knee robotic systems by Zimmer Biomet, allowing them to provide the latest cutting-edge technology for hip and knee replacements. Honolulu Spine was the first medical facility in Hawai‘i to receive the ROSA® Hips System in January of this year. The first robotic-assisted total hip replacement in the state was performed by orthopedic surgeon Paul Norio Morton, M.D. at Honolulu Spine in February. This new technology brings a number of benefits to patients in the islands, including more accurate implant positioning, fewer complications, and faster recovery.

“Honolulu Spine Center is proud to welcome the ROSA® Hips System and our newest partner, Dr. Paul Morton, aka The Robot Doc,” said David Waters, Administrator. “We are located in the Waterfront Plaza and are already renowned in Hawai‘i for our minimally-invasive neuro spine surgeries, orthopedic surgeries, and pain management procedures and services. And now Honolulu Spine has the distinction of having the ROSA® robot for total knee and hip joint surgeries.”

“As the aging population in Hawai‘i grows, so does the demand for quality hip replacement surgery,” said Dr. Morton. “Thanks to the new technology of ROSA® robotics, we are able to provide our patients with the best possible care. This minimally-invasive surgery is performed using a computer system to control robotic arms. The benefits of ROSA robotics include fewer complications, more accurate component positioning, and rapid recovery.”

Robot-assisted surgery is a new, exciting tool in orthopedics. Robotic arms have made an incredible difference in efficiency, accuracy, and consistency. While conventional surgery methods for joint replacements have a tremendous success history, this new technology offers many great advantages, including:

  • More data collected intraoperatively
  • Increased accuracy
  • Real-time info on size, alignment, and balance
  • Improved real-time surgical decisions
  • Optimized ligament balance
  • Personalized implant position
  • Consistent leg alignmentImproved safety with bone cuts
  • “Our mission at Honolulu Spine is to offer the best outpatient surgical care using the latest technology and providing a quality experience for each patient,” Waters added. “Our February 2022 patient survey results were 100% across the board – from our surgical care results to patient comfort and satisfaction.
