There are many benefits to paying for hip and knee replacements out-of-pocket. If you’re considering self-pay joint replacement surgery, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

Self-pay is usually only an option if you have the money upfront to pay for it and for patients who do not have insurance coverage, or are traveling internationally. The total cost of joint replacement surgery and recovery on average is $40,000 and can cost up to $100,000 depending on the type of procedure, location of surgery, and the surgeon you choose. We will provide you with a good faith estimate upon request for your hip or knee replacement.

Self-Pay Package Cost

The following prices are non-negotiable and can only be obtained by those who pay the full cost of the treatment in advance. These are discounted package prices that include the entire period of care. Please keep in mind that if you choose to have surgery at our facility and private insurance, or Medicare is handled by us or a third party on your behalf, these costs do not apply to you. This quote is only for surgery at Honolulu Sports and Spine. Any other facility chosen would change the overall cost of the package.

The quoted price is to be paid in full at least 7 days before your surgery. Payments are accepted via cash, bank check, money order, and credit card. For credit cards, there is a 3-4% fee added for credit card payments.

No Insurance Hassles

One of the biggest benefits of paying for orthopedic surgery out-of-pocket is that you won’t have to deal with insurance companies. Insurance companies can be a major hassle when it comes to medical procedures. They may not cover the entire cost of the procedure, or they may not cover it at all. This can leave patients with a large bill that they are responsible for paying. When you pay for orthopedic surgery out-of-pocket, you won’t have to deal with any of these hassles.

You’ll be able to choose your own surgeon. When you go through insurance, you’re usually restricted to a small pool of surgeons who participate in your plan. You may not have access to subspecialist care or advanced technologies such as robotics or smart implants. But if you pay for the surgery yourself, you can pick any surgeon you want.

Get the Procedure Done Quicker

When you pay for orthopedic surgery out-of-pocket, you will also be able to get the procedure done quickly. This is because insurance companies often have a long approval process that can take months or even years. However, when you pay for the procedure out-of-pocket, you will be able to get it done as soon as possible.

Not all hospitals or surgeons offer self-pay options for joint replacement surgery. So, if you do decide to go this route, make sure to call around and find a hospital that does offer this option.

Make sure to do your research when choosing a surgeon! This is especially important if you’re paying for the surgery yourself because you won’t have the same level of protection as you would if you were going through insurance. You’ll want someone who is board certified and has fellowship training in your particular procedure. Make sure to read reviews and ask around for recommendations before making your decision.
