East Hawai‘i

Dr. Morton was born and raised in Kea‘au and graduated from Kea‘au High School. The Hilo clinic and Hilo Community Surgery Center are both on Puuhonu Place in Hilo, so East Hawai‘i patients can have the consultation, the CT-planned Mako operation and the follow-up without leaving the island — same-day surgery, home that evening with a companion.

West Hawai‘i

The Kona clinic on Hualalai Road keeps consultations, pre-op visits and follow-up in Kona, with imaging at Kona-area facilities and telehealth between clinic days. Surgery for most routine replacements is a cross-island drive to Hilo Community Surgery Center; Waimea patients can use either clinic.

What patients say

  • “I am currently in my tenth day of recovery and doing quite well. My pain level is almost nil and except for driving I am able to carry on most of my daily living functions. What I like best about Dr Morton is his bedside manner.”

Hawai‘i Island questions

Do Big Island patients have to fly to O‘ahu for a joint replacement?
Usually not. Most routine robotic hip and knee replacements are done at Hilo Community Surgery Center with the Mako robot, as same-day surgery. Complex and revision cases, or anyone whose health may call for a night of monitoring, are planned at a hospital on O‘ahu, such as The Queen’s Medical Center, from the start.
Can I stay overnight at the Hilo surgery center?
No. Hilo Community Surgery Center has no overnight stay — everyone goes home the same day with a companion who stays with them for at least the first 24 to 72 hours. If your health might call for overnight monitoring, the surgery is planned at a hospital instead.
Which clinic should I use, Hilo or Kona?
The one that is easier from home. Both are Dr. Morton’s clinics with the same phone number, (808) 439-6201; they run on clinic days, so call for current days. Telehealth video visits on your phone fill the gaps between clinic days for patients in Hawai‘i.
Why does a Mako robotic replacement need a CT scan?
Mako builds its 3D plan from a CT scan of your own joint (no IV contrast). Dr. Morton uses that plan for implant size, position and alignment; the robotic arm keeps the instrument to the plan, and he performs every step of the operation.
