Why the trip is worth it

Why Patients Travel for Joint Replacement

Patients usually do not cross O‘ahu or fly in from another island simply because they need an X-ray. They travel because a decision — partial versus total replacement, a first replacement versus a revision, the surgical approach, the implant strategy, or what to do about a replacement that still hurts — may benefit from a subspecialist’s evaluation.

Dr. Morton leads surgical decision-making and performs the joint replacement operation, while other parts of the care pathway may involve physician assistants, nurses, physical therapists, anesthesia providers, and other members of the orthopedic team.

  • A second opinion before a total joint replacement

Being told you need a new joint is a big decision. A second look at your X-rays, symptoms and goals can confirm the plan — or show that a smaller operation or a non-surgical option fits better.

  • Partial-knee candidacy

When arthritis is limited to one part of the knee, a partial knee replacement keeps the healthy compartments and ligaments. Not every patient qualifies, and an exam plus standing X-rays settles it.

  • Revision expertise

Re-doing a hip or knee replacement — for loosening, infection, instability or wear — is its own field. Dr. Morton’s fellowship in adult reconstruction included complex revision surgery.

  • A specific surgical approach

Patients often come looking for the direct anterior hip approach or the subvastus (quad-sparing) knee approach. Whether either is right for you depends on your anatomy and your prior surgery.

  • Robotic planning

Robotic-arm assistance lets the operation follow a plan built from your own anatomy. Dr. Morton is certified on the ROSA®, Mako, CORI and VELYS systems; he, not the robot, performs the surgery.

  • An outpatient pathway

Many healthy patients can go home the day of surgery. Whether that is safe for you is decided case by case, with your health, your home and your support at home in mind.

  • A surgeon who specializes

Dr. Morton’s practice centers on the hip and knee. He completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction — hip and knee replacement — at the University of Chicago.

  • Keeping normal anatomy when it makes sense

Partial knee replacement and muscle-sparing approaches aim to keep what is still healthy. They are options, not promises, and they are not right for every joint.

  • Complex prior surgery

Old fracture hardware, earlier operations or unusual anatomy change how a replacement is planned. His AO Trauma fellowship in Berlin added training in complex fracture and periprosthetic care.

  • A painful or failed joint replacement

A replacement that still hurts deserves a cause, not just reassurance. The workup looks for infection, loosening, instability and other problems before anyone talks about revision.

Patients who made the trip

  • “He and his staff respect my time, are super friendly and efficient and the office is always clean and calm. I appreciate Dr. Morton's approach to treatments and that he is up to date on current developments in his field. He takes his time listening and explaining, not once have I felt uninformed.”

  • “The staff was friendly and helpful, especially the staff member who explained what I needed to do prior to surgery. Dr. Morton talks to you not at you, he gives you detailed information & asks for your input. I look forward to working with him.”

    — L T. · Google review · 2022
  • “I was very impressed by Dr. Morton. He cares for his patients and he explains the different procedures so that we can understand and I like that he doesn’t pressure us in doing something and he gives us a lot of options. I came in from Kaua’i and I’m glad I did get to see him.”
